Tagungen und Links/ Conferences and Links

Experimentelle Archäologie in Europa, Bilanz 2012. S. 33-48

And to continue the series of conference anouncements:

The theme of the International Medieval Congress, July 1st to 4th 2013 in Leeds, is "Pleasure". The program is quite extensive, which is why I did not manage to read it yet. But there seems to be at least one lecture on feast and feasting.

This years Exarc Conference, taking place in Lejre from April 12th to 14th 2013, has a presentation on experiments on the influence of human digestion on botanical material.

And for those who want to add items to their collection of historical cooking equipment a visit to the International Reenactment Fair at Villa Borg, April 20th to 21st 2013, seems promissing.

Finally some links on historic food:

A Danish-German cooperative project revealed possible error sources in dating ceramics using radiocarbon analysis; see also the article Philippsen et al.: "Kochversuche mit spitzbodigen Gefäßen der Ertebøllekultur und der Hartwassereffekt" (Cooking Experiments using Vessels with pointed Bases of the Ertebølle Culture and the Hard Water Effect). Experimentelle Archäologie in Europa, Bilanz 2012. S. 33-48

Daniel Serra and Hanna Tunberg are preparing a Viking cookbook involving archaeological and experimental evidence.
And last but not least a blog post on archaeobotanical food finds on the British Isles: Food finds in Britain.

Update: Tagung/Conference

The Deadline of the  Call-for-Posters for the conference in Graz has been extended until May, 6th.
And the Conference Homepage is now online (sorry, only in German). I don't know if I will be able to put a translation on here. At the moment I have to many other things to do.

A very short summary:

The conference is basically about dietetics in recipe collections and cooking manuscripts. In medieval and early post-medieval point of view "the doctor is the better cook" because ingredients and food preperation are the best prophylaxis against all kinds of illness.

Speakers are among others Melitta Weiss Adamson, Thomas Gloning, Johanna Maria van Winter, Kay Peter Jankrift ...

The Call-for-posters is still open and welcome are all kinds of poster presentations concerning medieval and post-medieval dietetics, cooking, nutrition, preparation techniques, food, drink, ... Everyone who wants to hang a poster is asked to give a 6 min. presentation. The best contributions will be awarded.
